Travel Writing: Intense Research, but with a View

What do Northwest Ohio, Southern Iceland, and the Guadalupe Mountains have in common? I’ve done travel writing for all three places – plus many more.

Travel writing is one of my favorite things to write becaues it feels like being back in school, in a good way. I can go from knowing next to nothing about Iceland to inundating my family with anecdotes about the Hudenfolk and igenous rocks and how the next volcano might disrupt global traffic…..it’s a fun hyperfixation.

With travel demand growing among younger demographics, there’s a call for readable, accurate background information and even tour narration. This is the perfect place to apply my Master’s Degree in History – need me to summarize a 14th century Danish royal dynastic crisis in 400 words to keep all the drama but not bore listeners? My brain is basically wired to synthesize those kinds of stories, and I love getting to share them with others.

For fellow writers out there – have you dipped a toe in travel writng? Or perhaps your bread and butter? I’d love to hear your experience!
